Tomasa H. "Tommie" Cavazos, 90, of Sterling, died Saturday, April 1, 2017 at her home.
She was born on December 28, 1926 in Tivoli, Texas a daughter of Candalerio and Andrea (Ortiz) Hernandez.
She attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and enjoyed bowling, cooking, playing bingo and her occasional trips to the casino. Tommie was known for making her homemade tamales for family and friends. Many people from around the area got to know her and would come to visit just to enjoy some of them. Tommie had a love of helping others in need be it family or a stranger, if they needed it, she would give. Tommie cherished her family and army of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to music especially her Mexican music.
Those surviving include her daughters, Yolanda Cavazos and Margarita Galindo of Sterling, Maria Arteaga of Mendota, Andrelita Bryan of Prophetstown, Ida Sliger, Rosita (John A. Canas) and Edwarda "Lala" Olivas of Sterling; her sons, Thomas Cavazos of Sterling and Juan A. Cavazos of Clinton, IA; 21 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and six sons, Ricardo, Richard, Valentine, Candalirio, Diego, and Miguel Cavazos and two grandchildren Christina Cavazos and Bernardino Arteaga.
Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday with the rosary recited at 3:30 PM at McDonald Funeral Home, 505 1st Avenue, Sterling. The funeral will be at 10 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Sterling. A memorial has been established.
