Shirley M. DeJarnatt, 89 of Sterling, died on Tuesday night, July 31, 2018 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Shirley was born on December 19, 1928 in Belvidere to Clifford and Edna (McLain) Burroughs. She married Carson DeJarnatt on December 28, 1947 in Belvidere. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1995.

A 1946 graduate of Belvidere High School, she played clarinet in the band and participated in choir. She taught music part-time then moved to Kindergarten and taught at Como, Coleta, Woodlawn and Franklin schools, retiring after 25 years of service. She previously was director of the children's choir and chime choir at First United Methodist Church in Sterling where she was a longtime member.

Shirley was an active participant and helper with the local food pantry and enjoyed playing Bridge in two clubs. She was also active in Roundtuits, Questers, AAUW, Book Club and church circle. She traveled to many far away places including Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia. She was an active reader and collector of antiques and teddy bears. She was generous to family, friends, and her community.

Survivors include her daughter, Michele (Eric) Linner of Crystal Lake; sons Mark (Linda) DeJarnatt of Washington, Barry (Diane) DeJarnatt of Sterling and David (Paige) DeJarnatt of Nashville, Tenn; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Ron Burroughs.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service at 10:30 with a luncheon following at 11:45 will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Sterling with Reverend Brad Wilson, Pastor, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Schools Foundation to establish a scholarship fund in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Sterling.
