STERLING – Robert W. Cheshier, 89 of Sterling died Friday June 8, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on August 13, 1928 in Vandalia, IL the son of Wilson and Zola (Helm) Cheshier. He married Dorothy Harrison on July 22, 1950 at St Patricks Catholic Church in Amboy. Robert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sterling and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a decorated Korean War Veteran earning the rank of Sergeant in the Army. In 2014 he took the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He was employed at Frantz Manufacturing in Sterling retiring after 44 years' service. He enjoyed gardening, mowing his yard and making his famous hot sauce "Hell in a jar". He was a big Newman Comets fan, enjoying watching his children and grandchildren play sports.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his children: Debbie Cheshier of Sterling, Marty (Jeannette) Cheshier of Orlando, F., Melanie (Mark) Fowler of Lyndon, Michael (Kathy) Cheshier of Bremen, GA., Kevin (Linda) Cheshier of Ft Dodge, IA., and Beth (Dave) Summers of Sterling; his daughter in law, Michele Cheshier of Rock Falls; his grandchildren: Lonnie Cheshier of Orlando, FL., Shaun Fowler of Spring Park, MN., Ryan (Amber) Fowler of Hopkins, MN., Heather (Chad) Jenkins of Sterling, Kathleen (Matt) Fischer of Fredericksburg, VA., Laura (Keith) Melfi of Springhill, FL., Leah Cheshier of Houston, TX., Emily Cheshier of Alexander City, Ala., Sara (Alfredo) Hernandez of Bettendorf, IA., Eric Cheshier of Davenport, IA., Megan Summers Benyo of Prophetstown, Caitlin (Mike) Seeley of Dixon, Haley, Christine and Catherine Cheshier all of Rock Falls; and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 step mothers; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; and his son Brian Cheshier.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday June 12, 2018 from 4-7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 505 1st Avenue in Sterling, with the Rosary being recited at 3:45 PM. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Reverend James Keenan and the Reverend Bruce Ludeke con-celebrating. Burial with military honors will conclude at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Newman Central Catholic High School and to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sterling.
