Sterling - Richard R. Lopez, age 79, of Sterling died Friday, March 16, 2012 at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford.
Richard was born January 25, 1933 in Heidenheimer, TX, the son of Samuel and Anita (Rodriguez) Lopez. He was member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling. Richard married Connie Consuelo Martinez on December 28, 1957 in Belton, TX. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling as an overhead crane operator for 31 years after retiring in 1995. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflicts. While still in Belton, TX Richard coached little league baseball for several years, even after they moved to Illinois he continued his little league baseball coaching. Richard was a Golden Glover Boxer in high school and while in the Army. He was on the Chadwick school board for 14 years. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Oakville Country Club, and was currently a member of Edgewood Country Club in Polo. Richard enjoyed spending everyday with his golfing buddies. He enjoyed woodworking, all kinds of sports, including his beloved Chicago Cubs and Bears. Richard was very passionate about his gardening and would share it with his neighbors.
He is survived by his wife Connie, four sons; David (Barb) Lopez of Ridgeland, Miss., Leonard (Debbie) Lopez of Port Byron, Ronald Lopez of Sterling, and Richard Roy Lopez of Two River, WI. Two daughters; Sylvia (Steve) Wiersema of Chadwick, and Teresa Moser of Sterling, two brothers; Joe (Lupe') Lopez of Belton, TX, Johnny Lopez of Temple, TX, two sisters Yolanda (Ray) Gomez of Round Rock, TX, and Ramona (Randy) Mendoza of Harker Heights, TX, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Rudy and Sam, and three sisters; Mary, Carmen, and Christina.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 6-8PM at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, 505 1st Avenue, with a Rosary service at 5:45PM. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling at 11Am with Father Donald Ahles officiating.
