Maria Luisa Montañez, age 87 of Sterling, died Friday, September 11, 2015 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Maria Luisa was born on August 25, 1928 in Michoacán, Mexico; the daughter of Filomeno and Felicitas (Vega) Mendoza. She married Refugio Montañez in El Paso, Texas; he preceded her in death on October 11, 1996. Maria Luisa was a fearless advocate for the less fortunate. She was a faithful wife and loving mother. Maria Luisa was a strong, independent woman, entrepreneur, business owner and respected community leader. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and had a deep, strong faith rooted in liberation theology. She will be missed and dearly remembered.

Survivors include her eight children, Martha (Luis) Magaña, Ilia (Andres) Quintana, Mario (Dorothy) Montañez, Ricardo (Seng) Montañez, Dolores (Oscar) Montañez, Isabel (David) Vasquez, Lucero (Ramon) Galindo and Victor (Josi) Montañez; twenty four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Victor Montañez; two sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, 505 1st Avenue. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling with Reverend Jesus Dominguez, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her memory.
