STERLING – Lowell E. Wechsler, 98 of Sterling, died Saturday February 23, 2019 at Rock River Hospice & Home in Sterling.
He was born on July 1, 1920 in Prairieville, IL the son of George and Anna Gladys (Millhouse) Wechsler. He served in the USAF during World War II. He had worked many years as an auto mechanic and had operated the former Wechsler Texaco & Gulf Service Stations in Rock Falls for 15 years.
Lowell was a founding member of the Rock Falls Chamber of Commerce and served as President.
He was a 50 year continuous member of the Rock Falls American Legion.
Lowell was a member of the Sterling Family Moose and in 2004 was awarded the Highest Degree of Pilgrim earning his gold jacket. He served as president and was on the Ritual team for many years. He worked Bingo taking money on Tuesday nights and helped on the Mother's Day and Easter Brunch.
Lowell was a staple of the Sterling Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, working in Joe Reaver's booth which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Lowell was fortunate to to go on the Honor Flight to Washington DC.
He enjoyed stained glass crafting and woodworking. He still had a valid driver's license and had just given up driving a few months ago.
Surviving is daughter Sheryl Hall of Rock Falls; son in law Don Simpson; sisters: Gladys Typer of Polo and Ethel Warner of Sterling; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
He was Preceded by parents; wife Hildred Wechsler; daughter Sharon Simpson; son Brian Wechsler; brothers: George and Kenneth Wechsler; sister Arlene Grobe; son in law Gary Hall.
Visitation Friday March 1, 2019 from 9 – 10:45 AM at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls with a Moose rites ceremony at 10:45 AM. Funeral at 11 AM. Military honors will conclude the services.
