STERLING - Joan Shelmerdene (HIcks) Smith went to be with her Lord on September 4, 2021.

She was born December 29, 1964 in Sterling Il to Kelly and Lois (Davis) Hicks. She graduated from Prophetstown High School with Honors. She attended Sauk Valley College. Joan had two sons, Aron (Jessica) Hassell of Ozark MO and Byron (Adelina) Hassell of Rock Falls IL. Joan married Michael Smith on September 20, 2014. In her younger years Joan played sports and coached Little League Softball. Throughout her life she loved helping others and she made friends everywhere she went. Joan was a prankster and loved to make people laugh. She enjoyed riding Harleys with her husband, she loved to read, spend time with family and friends and especially enjoyed their grandchildren. Joan worked as a Food Service Supervisor for several years and as a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist for Sinnissippi until retiring last year. Joan's passing will leave a void in many people's lives.

Joan is survived by her husband; sons; five grandsons, Wyatt Hassell of Ozark, MO, Noah Sodaro, Bryant Sodaro, Lucas Sodaro and Kyle Sodaro all of Rock Falls; one granddaughter, Lana (Emmy) Sodaro of Rock Falls; two sisters, Sharon Hicks of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Tracy (Will) Shaffer of Prophetstown; one brother, Greg Hicks of Rock Falls; several nieces and nephews, among them, Jeremiah (Kim) Easley of Tampico and Jacob Easley of Seattle, WA; and special friend, Christine Schultz of Sterling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two siblings, Sandra Hicks and Kelly (Russ) Hicks and the beloved dogs she shared with her husband, Trouble, Jules and Waldo.

A gathering of friends and family will take place on Monday September 13, 2021 from 1:30 – 3:30 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls. A service will follow at 3:30 PM with the Reverend Daniel Behmlander officiating.
