James Preston "Sweet Coc" (name originated from his love of Coca Cola) Starling, 70, of Prophetstown, IL, formerly of Des Moines, IA, and Rock Island, IL., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Winning Wheels Comprehensive Rehabilitative Care. Due to an accident, he spent the last 17 years of his life in comprehensive care. He accepted this period with great understanding and a positive outlook. Preston was born October 10, 1947 in Jackson, TN the son of Earl and Opal (Young) Starling. He was a hard dedicated worker, working in many occupations. He was a laborer in several locations. A favorite position was of being a Chef. Preston loved to cook and share, his favorite dishes with family and friends. He dressed with flair. He was an excellent dancer, loved to dance and socialize with friends and was the life of a party. Preston was proud of and loved his children and grandchildren. It gave him great joy to spend time with his family and friends. Survivors include one son, Rico (Nicole) Starling of Des Moines, IA; one daughter, Allameshia (Norman) Jones of Pensacola, FL; five sisters, Mildred Ellis of Moline,IL; Ella Sue Dunigan of Des Moines, IA, Farstine Vaughn of Des Moines, IA, Clara (Roland) Speights-McCorkle of Milan, IL, and Inetha White of Des Moines, IA; one brother, William E. Starling of Des Moines, IA; seven grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Carl (Harriett) Lamar of Des Moines, IA., and Othel "Buck" (Betty) Gay of Rock Island, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Damiera Tiesman. Preston was a sweet and loving person with a big heart and great smile. He will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank Winning Wheels, for their care, and kindness during his residency.
