Helen Long Blomberg, age 80 of Sterling died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Good Neighbor Care in Sterling.

Helen graduated from Community Catholic High School in 1952. Mrs. Blomberg was born August 7, 1934 the daughter of William and Florence (Sweeney) Long-Buckley from Harmon, IL. She was named the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Marycrest College from 1952-1956 and received a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education. She also received minors in English, Social Science (History) and Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. She also did extensive post graduate studies at Northern Illinois and Western Illinois Universities. While attending Marycrest, Mrs. Blomberg was chosen Kappa Gamma Pi, which is a national honor society for graduates of Catholic women's college. She spent 35 years teaching at Sterling Community Unit School District #5. She was selected to present her unit of "Language Arts in Outdoors" by Dr. Maurice Kellogg, professor of Outdoor Education at Western Illinois University. Mrs. Blomberg was very involved in the Whiteside County Spelling Bee, and was the pronouncer for the spelling bee for many years. A highlight of her final year of teaching was when one of her students came in second in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Blomberg was married to James "Jim" Blomberg (deceased August 19, 1999). In 2007 Mrs. Blomberg was inducted into the Newman Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews, one sister-in-law Patsy Long of Dixon, and one great friend David Sanders.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Richard "Dick" Long.

Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at 10:30 A.M. at the church with Reverend Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL at 2:30 P.M.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
