Harvey Joseph Waldschmidt, 96 of Sterling, died Friday, November 10, 2017 at CGH Medical Center peacefully from a short illness.

Harvey was born on July 8, 1921 in Metamora, Ill., the oldest of eleven, the son of Henry A. and Lillian (Elbert) Waldschmidt.

The family moved to the Waldschmidt Family Farm south of Rock Falls on March 1, 1942. Harvey was needed with the farming so he did not attend high school but graduated from grade school. He worked on farms and was a mechanic. He purchased his first car, 1929 Model A Ford with a rumble seat, for $12. He married Dorothy Near on March 5, 1946 in Sterling. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2003. He was employed at the Sun Shine Feed Store/ Wayne Feeds. In 1949, he began his small engine repair in his garage and was also working for Bob Propheter Construction and for his brother, Donald, at Turk's. In 1976, he moved and opened the Waldschmidt Mower Repair in Sterling where he owned and operated the business until he retired in 2004, but he continued to work many more years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and the Sterling Family Moose. Harvey enjoyed watching Nascar, cutting and splitting wood, which was used to heat the family home and his shop, and also enjoyed watching the Molly B. Polka TV Show and was a man who worked very hard. He also enjoyed a trip to Rome, Italy, Japan to visit his daughter, Gale and family and numerous side trips, especially to Branson, Missouri.

Survivors include his four daughters, Nancy (Darrell) Holbrook of Sterling, Ann (Orrie) Stroup of Sterling, Bonnie (Frank) Thayer of Sterling and Gale (Kevin) Beeker of Collinsville, Ill.; his son, Joseph Waldschmidt of Sterling; his grandchildren, Traci, deceased, (Dean) Payne of Sycamore, Scott (Susie Ottens) Holbrook of Orion, Thad (Becky) Stroup of Sterling, Chad (Angela) Stroup of Montgomery, Brad (Carrie Cox) Stroup of Sterling, Frank (Chris) Thayer of Sterling, JD (Alysia) Waldschmidt of Rock Falls, Jodi (Rodney) Rank of Rock Falls, Tristan (Laura) Beeker of Collinsville and Travis (Lynn McCormack) Beeker, Valley Park, MO; twenty-six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; six sisters, Geraldine Wike, Theoclete Wolf, Bernadine Coats, Phyllis Conklen, Betty (Hugh) Miller, Gloria (David) Sproul; two brothers, Richard (Erless) Waldschmidt and Henry (Marty) Waldschmidt, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one granddaughter, Traci Holbrook Payne; and two brothers, Donald and Francis Waldschmidt; and very special friend, Gen O'Malley.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls with the Rosary being recited at 3:30 P.M. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Reverend James R. Keenan, Celebrant officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.
