Garnett R. Stevens, Sr.
Garnett R. Stevens, Sr., age 85, of Rock Falls, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Regency Care of Sterling.
Mr. Stevens was born April 20, 1933 in Virginia the son of Frank and Mamie (Hicks) Stevens. He married Mary Aldridge on May 15, 1999. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the Rock Falls VFW and a member of the American Legion.
He was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire on the railroad for 29 years retiring in 1987. He was employed at First Student for 13 years as he was loved by all the children. He was known for being the candy man as he gave out candy every Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Stevens of Rock Falls; five children, Barbara (Bill) Beswick of Morrison, Garnett Ray Stevens, Jr. of Rock Falls, Ronnie E. Stevens of Morrison, Lisa (Darwin) Vanderlaan of Morrison and Theresa (Mary) Stevens of Sterling; seven step children, Rose Cooper of Nashville, Tenn., Joe Aldridge of Jonesboro, Joyce Anderson of Nashville, Tenn., Ruth Musellman of Fla., Chuck Aldridge of Rock Falls, David Aldridge of Rock Falls and Richard Aldridge of Morris; one sister, Shelva J. Kelly of W.Va.; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Burress of Prophetstown; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Neal and Janice Burress.
Visitation will be Monday, July 9, 2018 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 PM at the funeral home with Reverend Les Funderberg of the First Open Bible Church in Rock Falls officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
