Dove Emblem

Ethel Mae Barkdoll, 94, of Sterling, Ill. formerly of Theodosia, Mo., died on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at her home.

Ethel was born on March 6, 1923 in Tampico, Ill. to Leslie and Carla (Olsen) Whaley. She married Keith Barkdoll on March 2, 1944 in Rock Falls, Ill. He died on April 19, 2009.

After her children were raised, she turned her energies and focus to attaining her GED and graduating as a licensed practical nurse from Community General's nursing program. Ethel worked in the surgical department at CGH Medical Center and formerly at Galena Hospital in Galena, Ill. and a hospital in Estes Park, Colo., retiring in 1982 with 17 years of faithful service to the profession.

She attended St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling, Ill. and was a member of Theodosia United Methodist Church in Theodosia, Mo. Ethel enjoyed showing off her talents through her fabulous quilting, painting, and knitting. She loved to talk of her and Keith's travels and could bend an ear for hours regaling them of their wonderful adventures. Ethel and Keith worked for the U.S. National Forest Service as camp ground hosts and field technicians for 18 years in the mountains of Wyoming and Idaho.

In 1989, they moved to their "little piece of heaven" in Theodosia, Mo. Where they lived until Ethel's health forced her to move home to Illinois surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren. Once life and health silenced her voice, her children would say that she simply used up her allotted number of words in life at an earlier age.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Nancy (Stanley) Rasmussen, of Rock Falls, Ill. and Peggy Koppen of Whitley, Ky.; her sons, Lon (Linda) Barkdoll of Morton, Ill. and Kirk (Jan) Barkdoll of LeClaire, Iowa; her sisters, Dorothy Laubenheimer of Denver, Colo., Betty Weaver of Fla. and Helen Flucke of Independence, Mo.; a brother William Whaley of Rockford, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. While they will miss her so, each one will have her with them as their guardian angel.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Pearl Overley, Lucille Grennan and Esther Nusbaum; her brothers Clarence Whaley, Orville Whaley and Sherman Whaley.

Visitation will be from 10-11 AM Monday, June 12th at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling, Ill. The funeral will follow at 11 AM Monday at the church. Burial will be at 10 AM Thursday, June 15th in Lutie Cemetery in Theodosia, Mo. A memorial has been established in her memory to hospice of the Rock River Valley.
