Donald W. Lauts, 86
Donald Wayne Lauts, 86, a lifelong resident of Emerson, died Sunday, April 29, 2018. He was born June 18, 1931 in Prairieville, the second son of Herbert and Anna (Reins) Lauts.
Don enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1954, having attained the rank of Sergeant.
After returning from Korea, Don met and married Dorothy Mae Sharp, of Rock Falls. They began their life together in a stone house that Don started to build before he went to Korea. This would be the first of four homes Don would build for his family.
Don was a master stonemason who was recognized throughout northern Illinois for designing and constructing unique stone fireplaces that delighted homeowners. He also laid beautiful exterior stonework and many lovely area homes display his artistic and craftsman talents. Don preferred to work with genuine stone so that he could create structures that would last forever. He was passionate about his life's work. Unlike many who seek to retire, Don searched for ways to continue to work. For Don, laying stone was fun.
Don was also a skilled woodworker who could recreate an antique just by looking at a picture. He enjoyed watching Iowa Public Television, entertaining family and friends with songs on his player piano, and travelling.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his brother Edwin Lauts, of rural Sterling; three children Nancy and Stephen, of Pocatello, Idaho, and Timothy (Mary), of Rock Falls; two grandchildren, Amy (Joe) Ayotte, of South Beloit, and Bradley Lauts, of Emerson; four great-grandchildren; and, numerous nieces and nephews, including Sharon (Dickey) Johnson.
Don and Dorothy were longtime members of Messiah Lutheran Church, Sterling. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Messiah Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Coloma Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
