Donald L. Smoot, 77 of Sterling died Saturday August 25, 2018 at his home.

He was born on September 13, 1940 in Cobden, IL the son of Henry Floyd and Golda Virginia (Bell) Smoot and served in the Illinois Army National Guard. He married Sylvia Benkitis on September 4, 1965 in Sterling. Donald had worked at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Co in Sterling retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Sterling. He always had a large garden that he enjoyed working as well as working on and with his tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; his sons: Eric Smoot and Gary (Carolyn) Smoot both of Sterling; his sisters: Oma (Tony) Mickelson of Rock Falls and Margaret (Tom) Boken of Dekalb; his brothers: Vernon (Reta) Smoot of Sterling and Floyd Deon (Melodie) Smoot of Evansville, IN; two grandchildren: Kestrel and Katelyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 28, 2018 from 5-7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Avenue in Rock Falls. The funeral will follow on Wednesday at 10 AM at the First Church of the Nazarene in Sterling with the Reverend Jeremy McLaughlin officiating. Burial will conclude at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First Church of the Nazarene in Sterling.
