STERLING – Bernice M. Fester, 98 of Sterling died Tuesday March 18, 2014 at Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison.
She was born on November 24, 1915 in Freeport, IL the daughter of Frank G. and Edith (Faust) Michel and moved to Sterling with her family in 1923. She married Eugene Fester on July 29, 1936 in Chicago. He died in September 1995. She was associated with her late husband in the shoe business; worked for the Federal Government; insurance offices; and then as a transcriptionist at the former Central National Bank in Sterling for 20 years. Bernice was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, the Altar and Rosary Society had had been a noted 50 year member of the church choir. She was a charter member of the Sweet Adeline's quartet. She was a member of the Sterling Ladies of the Moose; the CGH Auxilary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for her grandchildren and friends; working crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Surviving are her five daughters: Judith (Dick) Hourigan of Moline, Penny Francque of Sterling, Connie Green of Phoenix, AZ, Mary (Benny) Escamilla of Sterling and Debbie (John) Devine of Sterling; one sister Valeria Reed of Sterling; 18 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 brothers: Shirl Michel and Leonard Michel; two grandchildren Joseph Escamilla and John Devine; and a son-in-law Joel Francque.
Visitation will be held on Thursday March 20, 2014 from 5-7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Avenue in Rock Falls with the Rosary being recited at 4:45 PM. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at 10:30 AM in St Mary Catholic Church in Sterling with the Reverend James Keenan as Celebrant. Burial will conclude at Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial will be established.
