Tribute & Message From The Family

Dorothy J. Pannell, 74, of Thomson, IL, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at Mercy Living Center, Clinton, IA.

Dorothy was born November 7, 1937, the daughter of J. Edward and Bernadette (Foreman) Kustes. She married Robert Pannell on April 23, 1960, in Fulton, IL. She was educated in the Smith rural school and graduated from Fulton High School. Dorothy grew up on the family farm in Fulton, until she attended Mount St. Clare College, Clinton, IA, where she graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree. She loved to laugh and sing. Dorothy loved to give of herself, she especially loved to teach children who struggled how to read and write. She enjoyed a good game of cards, musicals, plays and a good joke. She was an avid reader and lifelong learner. She was a devoted seamstress to her children in their youth and as well as her grandchildren. She also was a big supporter of the Girl Scouts and 4-H. She also loved her Shih Tzu, Sparky. Dorothy was employed with the Clinton Bridge Commission, Nielsen's corporation, Thomson School District and the West Carroll School District; retiring at the age of 70 because she couldn't bear the thought of being bored. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fulton, IL, the church's Altar & Rosary Society, Fulton American Legion Auxiliary, T.O.P.S. and Curves. Dorothy was a great asset to all of her children and was loved immensely by all who met her.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Pannell of Thomson, IL; 2 daughters, Barbara L. Lawrence of Fulton, IL and Lisa M. (Michael) Dienst of Maple Park, IL; 2 sons, Edward J. (Susan) Pannell and Richard J. (Jennifer) Pannell both of Fulton, IL; 13 grandchildren, Heather A. Houzenga of Savanna, IL, Brent E. Houzenga of New Orleans, LA, Meghan E., Scott M., Mitchell E. and Brett C. Dienst all of Maple Park, IL, Whitney L. Pannell of Thomson, IL, Morgan C., Hannah M., Jacob D., Eli H., Maxwell G., Zane R. Pannell all of Fulton, IL; 1 great granddaughter, Isabella M. Valdivia of Thomson, IL; and 2 sisters, Francis M. Powers of Sycamore, IL and Mary E. Biggs of Moline, IL; many nieces and nephews and a huge circle of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers, John E. Kustes, Jesse Lemmel and Virgil Lemmel.

It was Dorothy's wish that cremation rites be accorded. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Sunday, August 19, 2012, in the McDonald Funeral Home, Fulton, IL. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 20, 2012, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fulton, IL, with Reverend David Austin officiating. Inurnment will be at the Calvary Hill Cemetery, Fulton, IL.

Dear Bob, Barbara, Lisa, Ed and Richard:
I was deeply saddened to see the loss of Dorothy. I always remember a smile on her face as well as her kindness.

It took me back to the years of wonderful memories on North Fourth Street in Fulton when your family would visit your parents and grandparents home and Greg, Gail and I would have the opportunity to visit and play with your children. Our parent's, Russell and Gladys, and our family have a special place in our hearts for the Pannell's.

You have our deepest condolences.

Our sympathy to the family of Dorothy, we shared many wonderful times in the past with Dorothy, especially the laughter and fun at Grandma Kustes' house in our younger days, such lovely people.

Dorothy had a heart of gold and cared for friends and family deeply.

God Bless her and be with her children and our Uncle.

Barb, Brent, Heather and family-
On the few occasions I met your Mom/Grandmother she was always so warm and charming. At Brent's going away party we sat together and had a nice talk and she spoke then about her cancer and we spoke about my mother's as well. Then we enjoyed some pizza and few laughs.
It's a tough battle to watch someone go through but like my mom , your mother was a strong woman, she loved deep and she loved well. She could leave at peace, knowing the people she loved knew it because it certainly shows in the fabric that make of each of you.
The last thing my mother did in her role as a parent to me was show me how to leave this form of life with dignity and grace. Thanks mom and Barb's mom, we were so lucky to have you as our moms.
Love you guys. I will see you for sure on Sunday.

I have the fondest memories of spending many family picnics and Dottie bringing out the homemade pickles and those mints. I even got some mints sometimes all too myself as a perk for being her godson. I got achance to speak to her two weeks ago and mentioned that as I was now old enough, her godmotherly duties were done. She was quick to remind me that she was NEVER done with that and I shouldn't forget it.

I will miss her. May she rest in peace.

Barb, Lisa, Eddie, Richard...

This comes as a shock to all of us. I am so sorry for all of you, I know what it is like to lose a mom, the nurturer, the supporter, the school lunch maker, the lap and the shoulder to cry on...she will be missed by many whose lives she has touched with her wisdom, compassion, strength, and love.

She always LOVED my hair. I want that hair style was what she would always say. Made me feel good.

She is at peace in the eternal kingdom that she so fiercely believed in!!!!

I am very glad she made it to Ireland...something I only dream of...

All of my love to your family. She was a special lady & has a very special place in my heart. She's a great memory in my childhood. I had a chance to talk to her after she found out she was sick & she had such a great attitude about it. She told me if this was her time, it was her time. Only a lady with great faith could say something like that. My heart is with your family. Love, Lyn

To Barb, Lisa, Ed and Rich-I was so very sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I have wonderful memories of Dorothy both as a neighbor when I was growing up in Thomson, and especially when she drove the bus to Whiteside Vocational Center and to so many athletic, music and other events. Your mom was such a sweet and patient lady-I honestly don't know how she put up with some of the shenanigans, but somehow she kept her sense of humor, and we always knew that she cared about each and every one of us. She was a lovely person and will be missed by many. Keeping you all in thought and prayers, Teresa (Meakins) Linn
