STERLING – Tomasa D. Castaneda, 90 of Sterling died Monday October 21, 2019 at her home.

She was born on March 10, 1929 in El Paso, TX the daughter of Ventura and Augustina (Perez) Duran. She married John Castaneda on October 23, 1949 in El Paso, TX. Tomasa began her working career at Illinois Bell in Sterling and worked there for 25 years. Then she went to work at Centel Telephone Co in Dixon where she worked 15 years. Later she worked at Sterling Walmart for 25 years retiring two years ago. Whether you addressed her as "Vieja, Mom, Momma, Grandma C., Grams, Tata, Tomasa, Tomi, Tomato, Comadre, Mrs. Castaneda or Flaca", she was caring and treated you with love and respect. She loved everyone, and was loved by all. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church; Tomasa had enjoyed bowling, playing tennis, crocheting, and watching the Chicago Bears. She was an excellent cook and loved the time spent with her loving family.

Survivors include her husband, John; daughters Stella (Mike) Fortney of Sterling and Mary Bennett of Sterling; sons, John (Cynthia) Castaneda of South Elgin and Thomas (Jami) Castaneda of Sterling; her sister Juanita Duran of Dixon; her brother Ventura "Pee Wee" Duran of Rock Falls; 9 grandchildren: Kelly (Beth) Fortney, Ryan (Laura) Fortney, Jonna Rasbach-Castaneda, Melissa (Jeremiah) Sylvester, Michael Bennett, Katherine (Matthew) DeSanto, Elena (Jon) Lesniak, Joseph Castaneda, Natalie Marie Castaneda; 2 step grandchildren: Jessie Giles and Jacky (Andrew) Brougham; 13 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; special nephew, Jesse Duran and special niece, Mary White; and many other loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Victor Castaneda; son in law Kenny Bennett; grand daughter Jade Castaneda; grandson James Castaneda; 2 brothers: Jose and Jesus Duran; 1 sister Mary Bennett.

Visitation will be Sunday October 27, 2019 from 1-5 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Avenue in Rock Falls with the Rosary being recited at 5:00 PM. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday at 10 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church with the Reverend Jorge Bravo officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

She fought the good fight….and ended up the winner ! The winner of eternal peace in heaven. No one deserves it more.
