STERLING – Ronald F. Marlier, 77 of Sterling died Saturday May 11, 2019 at his home.

He was born on October 9, 1941 in Moline, IL the son of Walter and Irma (Herman) Marlier. He had earned his AA degree from Black Hawk College; his BA degree from the University of Iowa; his MA degree from Rockford College. Ron had completed post graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, Northern Illinois University and Knox College having earned combined total of 30 credits above his MA. He married Shirley Watt on February 9, 1980. She died June 14, 2004. Ron was a charter member of the faculty of Sauk Valley Community College beginning in 1966, until his retirement in 2000 as Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs. He had served on the Whiteside County Board for 14 years; he had been active in politics locally and at the state level. Ron had served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman; as the past treasurer of the Rock Falls Lions Club; as past President and member of the Whiteside County Association for the Mentally Handicapped; and a past member of the Education Committee for Exceptional Care Center. Ron enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling, golfing and dancing. He was an avid Chicago CUBS and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Surviving are his sons: Matthew (Angela) Marlier of Moline, IL and Michael Marlier; step daughters: Kimberly (Phillip) Crump of Sterling and Amy Smith Henderson, CO; 8 grandchildren: Sarah (Isaac) Kittleson, Drew Marlier, Hayley Marlier, Alexzander Crump, Molly (Hector) Ruiz, James Crump, Amber Smith and Bailey Smith.; and one step great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley and his brother Gary Marlier

Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 15, 2019 from 5-7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Avenue in Rock Falls. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday at 10 AM in Sacred heart Catholic Church in Sterling with the Reverend Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial will conclude on Friday at the Union Cemetery in Harshaw, WI.
