Marian taught elementary school in Monroe Center and Genoa, and for 27 years she taught 2nd grade at Northside Elementary School in Morrison. During that time she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University.

She married Frank Hiland, of Dekalb, on August 27, 1944 in Lyndon. They lived in Sycamore and Dekalb and in 1946 they moved to the family farm in Lyndon where they raised their children. Frank preceded her in death on November 20, 2014 after 70 years of marriage.

Marian is survived by her children, David (Hilda) Hiland of Chesapeake, Va.; Sue (Neil) Castelein of Taylor, Texas, and Mary Lou (David) Bend of Lamoille, 7 grandchildren, Andrew Castelein, Matthew Castelein, Lindsay Kendall, Peter Castelein, Nicoile Lee, Danielle Hiland and Erin Brenner; and 9 great grandchildren.

Marian was a member of the Lyndon Congregational Church, the Lyndon Historical Society and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a 4-H leader for 20 years. Sewing, dancing, cooking, reading, gardening and traveling were activities that she enjoyed throughout her life. She and Frank belonged to several flying clubs and enjoyed taking trips in their airplane as well as hosting fly-ins at their farm. They spent 20 winters together at their home in Mission, Texas.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private graveside services were held on Friday, May 25 at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. A celebration of her life will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Lyndon Historical Society. Arrangements are through McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Prophetstown.

I, too, was one of her many second grade students. A cherished memory is of her reading all of the "Oz" books to us - to this day, I love to read (and to be read to). I remember her smile and gentle ways - may you find comfort in knowing how many lives she positively touched.

She was one of my favorite teachers. Would think of her fondly over the years. She was always patient and kind, and always smiling. Even after 40+ years, still remember her kindness. Sorry for your loss. Your all in my prayers.

Mrs. Hiland was my 2nd grade teacher in 1968-1969. She was a great teacher and a REAL LADY. My favorite memory is the post office that we operated for the whole school. Thank you all for sharing her with so many students for so many years. God Bless.

My grandma and grandpa Beveroth really loved "the Hilands", and spoke of them highly. They wintered with them in the same community in Mission. When I had the chance to visit, Mr. And Mrs. Hiland drove us all around and to the ocean. They also had a grapefruit tree they let my grandma, grandpa and I pick from for breakfast. Apparently, Mrs. Hiland and I also share a birthday. She touched a lot of lives in such a positive way. Love to the family.
