My mother, Catherine Nenninger, and Nick were cousins. We referred to Nick as her "telephone buddy" since they spoke regularly. I believe Nick was her last surviving cousin. Mom's sister, Teresa Roling Wisler, still resides in Bettendorf. Mom will miss her cousin and phone buddy. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family.

My family and I send our sympathy to Nick's family. We are related via the Hughes side. My grandfather was Thomas Hughes, and my Mom is Maxine Hughes-Klump. Her brother was Gerard (Jerry) Hughes. I know that Mom and Uncle Jerry always spoke fondly of Nick and Nancee. Sending prayers your way!

My mother knew him from St. Mary's and Morningside. Each Sunday morning, Nick would bring bulletins for church members that were unable to attend services at St. Mary's. I often saw him in the hall, and he always smiled and said hello. He will be missed at Morningside and at St. Mary's. Our condolences to his family. Erma Scharfenberg and Chris Knisley

I was a classmate of Nick's in the class of 1949. We have kept in touch by email for years. Talked to him a couple times and we always glad to get updates on other classmates. Whenever I got back to Sterling to see my family, I would go to mass at St. Mary's and was greeted by Nick when he was ushering.
I grew up on Avenue D and the Hughes lived on Avenue C. I spent some time visiting with his Mom. My brother Fred was a good friend of his brother Tom.
I especially want to thank his daughter Ann for notifying me of his death. She found a letter that I had written some time ago with my phone number.
My sympathy to the family and Nick will be remembered in my prayers.
