Tribute & Message From The Family

Ryan Steven Schafer, 43, of Edmond, Oklahoma, formerly of Sterling, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014.

On Dec. 31, a loving son, cherished brother, and devoted husband and father was taken into the loving arms of the Lord.

With all burdens removed from your shoulders, you can soar to the heavens, fly with the birds, catch a snowflake with the palm of your hand, and sing with the angels.

As God's gift to our family, our hearts are broken, our spirits shattered, but our love abounds for you.

Your kind and thoughtful ways will always be with us until we meet again.

Ryan was born Jan. 24, 1971, in Sterling, the son of Ronald and Beverly Jill (Short) Schafer. He graduated from Sterling High School, Class of 1989, and went on to receive his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma. Ryan owned his own company in Oklahoma called Syd-Do.

Survivors include his mother, Jill of Sterling; his wife, Sandy of Edmond; two children, Sydney, 11, and Jett, 8, both of Edmond; one brother, Douglas Schafer of Moline; two sisters, Lori Baumgart of Sterling, and Beth Schafer of Champaign; five nieces and nephews, Mitchell Magnafici, P.J. Baumgart, Shaylee Baumgart, Lindsay Knutsen, and Zachary Schafer; one aunt and uncle, Imogene and Carrol Cline of Petersburg; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ron.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, 505 First Ave., Sterling. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Sterling, with Rev. Nathan Wilkins officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I met Ryan in 1995 and worked with him at Conway Express trucking company. We both left after one year. Back then there were no cell phones and no email. We went different directions and later in life I saw him in a Kohl's store in Edmond, OK, I think in 2007. It was great to see him. Anyway, I was thinking about him one night as I often do with old friends when I'm at work in the middle of the night like tonight and looked up his name on the internet. I have avoided participating in any social media,. but I found this obituary. I am so saddened. What a tragic loss to such an accomplished yet humble and genuinely nice guy. I have no idea what could have happened to him, he appeared healthy, but I haven't seen him in so many years. I am so sorry. I miss him, and I haven't even seen him in a long time. Its just that kind of impact a guy like he has on others. A terrible loss.

I want to thank Ryan for all the memories that go all the way back to Jefferson grade school and continued throughout SHS. Some of my best memories of you were that you always a kind, funny and generous person. You were great in sports but were always willing to help anyone that needed it without making them feel belittled. I remember you even ended up playing on the little league team my dad was the coach on when you were grade school and helped my little brother because that is just the type of person you were.
May God be with your family during this difficult time and find joy in all the memories they had with you.

I was a couple years behind Ryan in school, and when I started wrestling, he was one of a few guys everyone looked up to, a leader who would never let teammates take it easy. He was never anything but a friendly teammate with a warm smile, despite a killer instinct on the mat. I was glad to have the chance to watch him wrestle at state his senior year, to try and defeat a three time champ, despite the outcome; what a competitor, even in a rare loss. He taught so many of us how to work harder than you knew you had in you, and to respect everyone on the team. I'm at a loss that he's gone so young, and I send prayers for comfort and peace to his wife and two kids, his mom, and his siblings, including my former coach, Doug. Thank you all for sharing him with those of us humbled to be his teammates.
Rest in Peace, Ryan.
